Rivero helps Mesa to win

Cubs relief pitcher Armando Rivero continues his trek to Wrigley Field as the right-hander from Cuba added another positive outing to his AFL resume. The 25-year-old was signed in March and made a quick rise through the Cubs minors reaching AA Tennessee.

Arizona Fall League

Armando Rivero (0-1 5.40 ERA) had his third straight outing without allowing a run, blanking Surprise in Mesa's 9-4 win. Rivero surrendered a one-out single in the sixth but needed only 11 pitches to get out of the inning, including a strikeout. His fastball (9 pitches) averaged 96, topping out at 97. The right-hander, who could earn a spot in the Cubs bullpen out of spring training, has 9 K in 10 IP.

The Cuban right-handed relief pitcher made his professional debut for Kane County on June 22 after the 25-year-old signed for $3.1 million in March. Rivero, who hadn't pitched competitively in over a year, got off to a slow start for the Cougars, allowing 14 hits and 11 runs in his first 8.2 innings. In his final five games at Kane County, he had 18 strikeouts in 9.2 shutout innings. He was promoted to Daytona (0-0 2.70 ERA, 3.1 IP) pitching three games, and then finished up the year with six games and 8.2 innings at AA Tennessee (0-1 2.08 ERA, 3BB 12K).

Jorge Soler knocked in his 13th run as the designated hitter was 1-5 with a run and fanned twice. 3B Kris Bryant went 1-5 with a strikeout.

Albert Almora entered the game in the bottom of the ninth as a defensive replacement in right field. Wes Darvill was a defensive replacement in the sixth at second base and grounded out to second in his only plate appearance.

Venezuelan Winter League

No Cubs' prospects played on Saturday.

Dominican Winter League

2B Arismendy Alcantara (.189) pinch hit in the sixth and grounded out in Licey's 10-1 loss to Gigantes. He struck out in his second at-bat. Julio Borbon replaced Dee Gordon in the bottom of the fifth in centerfield and walked in his only plate appearance.

Junior Lake (.286) was 1-4 (single) with a strikeout in Estrellas' 3-2 loss to Escogido.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Christian Villanueva helped fuel a second inning rally leading Obregon to a 4-3 win. Villanueva doubled in the first run of the game and then scored on a base hit in the four-run frame. He was hitless in his final three at-bats.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Rubi Silva (.333) doubled in three plate appearances in Ponce's 3-2 loss. He left the game in the sixth for a pinch runner after the extra base hit. Jonathan Mota (.167) went 0-3 with walk.

Edwin Maysonet walked and scored in the first in Santurce's 5-3 loss in 11 innings. He finished 1-4 with a strikeout.
