A's Set Their 2013 Opening Day Roster

After claiming a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants in game three of the Bay Bridge Series, the Oakland A's announced their 2013 Opening Day roster. The A's will begin the 2013 season on Monday at the Oakland Coliseum against the Seattle Mariners.

The Oakland A's ended a busy week of transactions with the announcement of their Opening Day 25-man roster on Saturday afternoon. The A's will open the season with 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders. Oakland will also open the season with three players on the disabled list (Fernando Rodriguez, Adam Rosales and Hiroyuki Nakajima).

Rodriguez will be out for the entire season after he underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this week. Rosales and Nakajima may only miss a few weeks, however, as each are dealing with muscle strains. Nakajima has a left hamstring strain and Rosales has a strained left intercostal.

After optioning left-hander Jordan Norberto and DFAing 1B Daric Barton and Travis Blackley on Friday, the A's finalized their roster by optioning left-hander Pedro Figueroa and infielder Andy Parrino to Triple-A Sacramento and re-assigning catcher Luke Montz, right-hander Mike Ekstrom and left-hander Hideki Okajima. Norberto, Figueroa, Parrino, Montz, Ekstrom and Okajima are all expected to start the season with Sacramento.

The A's second base and back-up infield spots went to Eric Sogard, Scott Sizemore and Nate Freiman. Sogard and Sizemore are expected to platoon at second base in the early going, while Freiman will platoon with Brandon Moss at first base. In the bullpen, right-hander Evan Scribner won the final spot.

Oakland's starting rotation to begin the season will be Brett Anderson, Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone, A.J. Griffin and Dan Straily. Bartolo Colon will be eligible to return from his suspension on the sixth day of the regular season. He will need to be added to the 25-man and 40-man rosters at that point. Colon is expected to take Straily's spot in the rotation, although that could change at any time.

With Nakajima sidelined, Jed Lowrie will assume the everyday shortstop duties, with Sogard filling in on occasion.
