Arizona Fall League: Surprise – OFF

As usual, the Arizona Fall League was quiet on Sunday.

Dominican Winter League

Showing off his flair for the dramatic, Tigres del Licey shortstop Jurickson Profar socked a walkoff solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was his only hit in five at-bats.

The switch-hitting Profar is off to a strong start through three Dominican Winter League games. Playing both second base and shortstop while hitting in the middle of the Licey order, the 19-year-old Profar is 4-for-12 (.333) with a double and that home run. He's drawn a walk and struck out once.

Third baseman Mike Olt (1/4) and right fielder Engel Beltre (1/3) both singled and drove home a run. Beltre also laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Leadoff man Leonys Martin was hitless in four official at-bats, striking out twice and walking once. Both Martin and Profar committed an error in the field on Sunday.

Cibao second baseman Leury Garcia (.286/.321/.442) extended his modest hitting streak to five games by notching two singles in four at-bats. He also struck out twice.

Although the 21-year-old Garcia has scuffled at the plate lately, he's still a solid 22-for-77 (.286) in 19 winterball contests with four doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He's drawn three walks and fanned 17 times.

Venezuelan Winter League

Joe Ortiz (3.18 ERA/.186 BAA) earned his fourth hold of the winterball campaign for La Guaira, striking out one in a perfect eighth inning.

Although Ortiz is a left-handed reliever, he's faced only eight lefty batters in his first 13 LVBP appearances this season. Fellow lefties are 0-for-7 (with one HBP) against him while righties are 8-for-36 (.222) without an extra-base hit.

Lara's Guilder Rodriguez saw action as a pinch runner in the bottom of the ninth inning. He didn't get a plate appearance.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

There were no Liga Paralela games on Sunday.

Mexican Pacific League

Venados de Mazatlan right fielder Joey Butler (.239/.357/.338 in 20 games) singled once in four at-bats.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Brandon Snyder helped carry his Ponce club to a 7-3 victory on Sunday with a perfect performance at the plate. Starting in left field before finishing the game at first base, Snyder went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and two walks. He had four runs batted in.

The Leones de Ponce, who are managed by Rangers minor league catching coordinator Hector Ortiz, have a number of Rangers prospects on their roster. Snyder, Mike Bianucci, Jorge Alfaro, Alexander Claudio, Tim Murphy, and Jon Edwards all appeared for the club on Sunday.

Bianucci, playing in right field, went 1-for-4 with a double, a hit-by pitch, and an RBI. The DH Alfaro added two singles and an RBI in five trips.

Through his first three winterball contests, Alfaro is 6-for-12 (.500) with a double, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Sidearming left-hander Alexander Claudio got the start for Ponce and yielded two runs in four innings. He scattered five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Lefty Tim Murphy (1.2 IP) retired all five batters he faced out of the bullpen––getting one strikeout––while right-hander Jon Edwards (1 IP) pitched around a single and a walk in a scoreless ninth. He struck out one.
