For the next 15 days major league teams will either be renewing the Professional Baseball Contract with their minor league affiliates, or they will be signing with new teams. However, earlier this week the Blue Jays made a surprising announcement to the Appalachian League stating they are dropping their rookie league affiliate in Pulaski.
While that announcement was enough of a surprise to the league, the Blue Jays are currently not planning on adding another affiliate, which would leave them as the only organization in baseball with just five minor league affiliates.
While this move leaves the Appalachian League with its own share of troubles, it also means many players currently in the system will be released at the end of the season.
“It’s simple mathematics,” said one player who wanted to be left anonymous. “If they drop Pulaski it means 30 jobs for us players will be lost.”
Unlike the five other minor league affiliates of the Blue Jays, Pulaski was owned and operated by the Blue Jays. Calls to Jays’ officials were not returned regarding the matter.
The Blue Jays entered the season with their PBC’s in Lansing and Auburn expiring. Earlier this season the Blue Jays and Lansing extended their PBC for two more years.
