Scouting Jays Prospect #21 Jonathan Del Campo

Scouting Jays Prospect #21 Jonathan Del Campo

Del Campo has a lot of pressure to live up to his pre-draft hype and right now he's doing a good job of it.

After being drafted in the 20th round of the 2006 draft Del Campo had a solid season at the plate for the GCL Blue Jays. The switch hitter batted .337 with twenty-seven games for the club. Del Campo was considered the best prospect in the state of Arizona in his draft class, and despite being drafted in the 20th round, he received a hefty six figure bonus to forgo college and sign with Toronto. As a result the infielder has a lot of pressure behind him to live up to those expectations.

Batting and Power: Del Campo does not possess much power and some scouts don't believe he will turn that around and hit for power. Evaluators are mixed on his future power potential but all do agree it's very early in his career to make an accurate assessment. The safe bet is to label Del Campo a line drive hitter. Scouts are concerned about his lack of plate discipline early on in his career and that is one aspect of his game they expect him to improve on.

Baserunning and Speed: Del Campo is not a real fast player. His mechanics stealing bases need help and he has not shown much aggressiveness on the basepaths.

Defense: Arm strength should not an issue for Del Campo. The infielder has a strong arm for shortstop and should be able to remain at that position in pro ball. He has also shown good range at times and his footwork is solid for this stage of his career.

Projection: Overall Del Campo is an average player right now. Scouts are worried about his footwork and quickness a little on the base paths. Del Campo is projected to be a bottom of the order type of hitter in pro ball right now, although the expectations for him are a future two-hole hitter type of player.

2008 Outlook: Del Campo will begin the year in extended spring training and start the season with Auburn.
