Schmidt Race Could Impact Jays' with Lilly
Ted Lilly

InsideTheDome has learned that if the Cubs are successful in signing Jason Schmidt, they would drop their quest of Ted Lilly. - FREE PREVIEW OF PREMIUM CONTENT

Baseball officials believe that Schmidt really wants to stay in the West Coast, however, over the past few weeks he has begun to understand that his wish might not be granted.

“I think it’s real accurate to say that geography is not going to eliminate anybody,” Schmidt’s agent Scott Sanderson said.

“We talked to Jason about it. Just because a team is in a certain location, that will not take them out of the race.”

Currently the Mariners and the Dodgers are in the front of the pack for Schmidt’s services, however, the Cubs, and Cardinals remain in the race.

According to multiple executives, Schmidt currently has an offer on the table from a west coast team – believed to be Seattle – worth approximately $44 million over four years.

“The end value for Schmidt will certainly be a four year deal at minimum, and his average annual value of his contract will likely be $15 million.

Sources tell InsideTheDome that the Cubs want to sign Schmidt, but believe their location on the map, and Seattle’s strong interest, puts them in a difficult position.

“You can take it to the bank that if the Cubs sign Jason, they will eliminate themselves from the race for Lilly.”

One baseball official said Saturday afternoon that he believes the Cubs are in the distance to sign Schmidt because they have made a strong offer to Ted Lilly.
