Klosterman Breaks Finger in Arizona
Ryan Klosterman

Posted Oct 27, 2006

Ryan Klosterman was forced to end his Arizona Fall League campaign early after breaking his knuckle on his middle finger. Find out from Ryan about the injury, how long he will be out, and his experience playing in Arizona the past two weeks.

Klosterman suffered the injury in the fifth inning of Wednesday’s game after moving from second base to third base. It was the second time Klosterman was playing third base this season. This time he was at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Michael Garciaparra was the third batter in that inning, and on the first pitch he saw, he hit a ground ball down the third base line. As Klosterman was getting ready to field the ball it took a sharp hop upwards causing the fracture of his middle finger.

“It was just a bad hop,” Klosterman said as he was leaving Arizona. “There was nothing I could have done about it.”

The 24-year-old is scheduled to arrive to his Florida home on Monday, and will then see a hand specialist on Tuesday. He’s expected to be sidelined one month, but the injury does end his Arizona Fall League season. In eight games he batted .308 with three runs batted in.

The fifth round pick in the 2004 draft was selected to play in the inaugural “Rising Stars Showcase” on Friday, but was scratched from the roster because of the injury.

“I had a great experience down in Arizona,” said the infielder. “You learned a lot about how you fit in with that type of competition, and it was a learning experience seeing a different pitcher each at bat.”
