Winter Ball: Cannon Homers Again

Chip Cannon continued his impressive AFL campaign Saturday afternoon when he belted his third home run in nine games. Curtis Thigpen was also in action, and scored twice, while drawing a pair of walks, while Ryan Klosterman drove in a run. Ryan Patterson hit his first home run of the Hawaii Winter Baseball League on Saturday.

Chip Cannon got his afternoon started with a bang immediately. In the first inning he drove a first pitch fastball from starter Matt Palmer over the right field fence for a two-run shot.

After grounding out in the fourth inning, Cannon drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning, but caused more havoc an inning later. With Patrick Misch on the mound, and Curtis Thigpen on first base, Cannon belted a 2-0 fastball to deep center field, enabling Thigpen to come around and score. The slugging first baseman ended his afternoon with his second walk of the day in the eight inning.

"He's definitely shown that he possesses big league power," noted one scout. "He just needs to cut down on his strikeouts and be more patient at the plate. Today, he should he can do that."

Ryan Klosterman got an RBI single in the fifth inning and finished the day 1-for-3 with a run scored, and one walk. Meanwhile although Thigpen went 0-for-2 on the afternoon, he did draw a pair of walks and ended up scoring both times.

Tracy Thorpe pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one walk, while fanning a pair of batter. He came on with a runner on first base in the eighth inning and got Ryan Braun to fly out to right, and struck out Mark Reynolds to end the inning. He went on two retire the first two batters he faced in the ninth, before issuing a walk to Vinny Rottino, and was then pulled.

Cannon leads Phoenix with three home runs and nine runs batted in. He's batting .355 (11-31) in nine games with the club.
