Ricciardi Holding his Stance this Deadline

Ricciardi Holding his Stance this Deadline

The trade deadline is four days away and the Jays are very quiet on the trade front. The price if starting pitching remains too high, and the Devil Rays are not changing their asking price for Julio Lugo. While Ricciardi continues to monitor pitchers, he is trying to trade for Julio Lugo. At the same time the Rays are talking with Lugo about signing him to a contract extension.

Earlier this week the Jays were the front runners to land Lugo, however, over the past three days the Mets and Red Sox have became more active in negotiations. However, the Devil Rays are committed to signing Lugo to an extension and their asking price still remains high.

The Jays have rejected two proposals from the Devil Rays for Lugo. The Rays first trade proposal came late last week, when they asked for Dustin McGowan and Brandon League. A second proposal of Dustin McGowan and Shaun Marcum followed.

The Jays have yet to make a formal trade offer, but has given Tampa a list of five pitchers they can choose from.

Devil Rays scouts were monitoring David Purcey this week, and it's believed any deal for Lugo will include the southpaw.

"Ricciardi is not going to move Dustin [McGowan] in any deal this month," one Jays insider said Wednesday evening. "As far as League and Marcum goes, they could be moved, but it has to be for the right player, and at the very last minute.
