SkyChiefs Drops Pitchers Duel
Cole Hamels and Jamie Vermilyea both pitched well in their starts on Sunday afternoon, but it was Scranton W/B that took a 2-1 decision in ten innings.
Brian Tallet allowed a two-out home run to Dusty Wathan for the game winning run.
Syracuse scored their only run in the first inning, on a Jason Phillips RBI single. Scranton came back to tie it in the sixth inning after Vinnie Chulk relieved Vermilyea and allowed a two-out home run to Brennan King.
Vermilyea pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out five. Vermilyea was making his second Triple-A start of the season and has yet to issue a run in ten innings. His two walks were the first of the season between Double-A and Triple-A.
Chulk allowed a run in his inning of work. Ryan Houston followed Chulk with two scoreless innings, in which he fanned four batters and issued a pair of walks. Tallet fell to 1-2 allowing a run in 1 2/3 innings.
Fishers Lose Sixth Straight
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats dropped their sixth straight contest Sunday afternoon as Binghamton scored three runs in the seventh inning and went on for a 5-4 victory.
Hill came on to replace starter Brian Wolfe in the seventh and after recording a quick out, allowed a double, a walk, and a single to load the bases. Carlos Gomez followed with a two-run double, and Jonathan Slack scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
New Hampshire went on the scoreboard first with a two-run third inning. David Smith began the rally with a two out single, and scored the next at bat when Chip Cannon lined his sixth double of the season. Vito Chiaravalloti followed Cannon with an RBI single for the 2-0 lead.
Binghamton came back and tied it in the third as Wolfe allowed two solo home runs, but New Hampshire retook the lead in the fourth inning when Adam Lind singled with two outs to score John Schneider, who led the inning with a double.
New Hampshire added another run in the seventh when David Smith belted his fourth home run of the season.
Wolfe allowed two runs, on three hits in six innings of work. The right-hander was making his first start in Double-A this season after going 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA in 24 innings with Dunedin. Hill suffered his first loss of the year allowing three runs in two innings.
Smith and Schneider each had two hits in the victory. Both of Schneider’s hits were doubles. Smith is hitting .364 (8-22) over his last seven games with a pair of home runs. Adam Lind is hitting 6-for-13 over his last three games and .391 (9-23) over his last seven games.
Dunedin Holds on for Win
The Dunedin Blue Jays survived a mini-rally in the ninth inning by Vero Beach to hold on to a 5-3 victory. Dunedin led 5-1 going into the bottom ninth.
Juan Peralta opened the scoring for Dunedin with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Ryan Klosterman drove in the third run of the game for the Blue Jays with his seventh double of the season in the seventh inning. Dunedin got two more runs in the ninth inning on a two-run single by Ryan Patterson. Klosterman extended his hitting streak to six games with his double.
Patterson finished the game 2-for-5, while Aaron Mathews went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Patterson has recorded a hit in 10 of his last 11 games.
Orlando Trias improved to 4-1 with six strong innings, in which he allowed a run on six hits.
Lugnuts Lose in Ten
Pitching in his third inning in relief, Paul Phillips allowed a walk-off two run homer to Ryan Norwood in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Peoria a 5-3 victory and sweep the series over Lansing, who has dropped four straight games.
Earlier in the game the Lugnuts saw Kerry Wood up close. Wood dominated the Lugnuts striking out twelve batters in five innings.
Lansing tied the game in the seven inning putting three runs on the board. Anthony Hatch singled to score Brian Pettway and make the score 3-1. Anthony Garibaldi slipped rounding third base on the play and was thrown out trying to scurry back to the bag. Sean Shoffit then singled to right field to pull within one at 3-2. Jacob Butler then hit an infield single to plate Hatch, but Sean Shoffit was thrown out at third after the run scored which made the score 3-3.
Billy Carnline allowed a season high three runs and eight hits in five innings. Jordan Timm and Joey McLaughlin each pitched a scoreless inning. Phillips snapped a seven inning scoreless streak and suffered his first loss of the season. McLaughlin has tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings since his return to Lansing.
