Auburn Doubledays: Offensive Player of the Year
Ryan Patterson

Posted Sep 22, 2005

The Auburn Doubledays had a successful 2005 campaign as they went to the NY-Penn League Finals for the first time in team history, however, they got swept by the Staten Island Yankees in two games. The Doubledays offense had a major impact in the success of the season as it slugged its way to the top of the league leader board. Auburn combined to hit for a .260 average and his 58 home runs as a team.

The club was represented by three position players in the inaugural NY-Penn League All-Star game, proving their performance did not go unnoticed. When it came down to selecting the Most Valuable Offensive Player for the Auburn Doubledays there were several candidates, however, the winner was unanimous.

One player that received several of the second place votes was Auburn’s All-Star Catcher Brian Bormaster. The second year player began the season as the backup catcher, playing behind 2005 draftee Josh Bell, however, soon bolted himself into the lineup on an everyday basis. Bormaster hit .325 with a home run and eighteen runs batted in this season. Jermy Acey, another NY-Penn League All-Star hit .301 on the season with 4 home runs and 17 runs batted in. Cory Patton, who was transferred from the Lansing Lugnuts roster as the short-season leagues began also got some attention due to hit team leading 14 home runs. Joey Metropoulos, another second year player also was involved in the discussion as he hit .292 with six home runs and twenty-eight RBI, however, in the end the winner was clearly the fourth round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2005 draft, Ryan Patterson.

Patterson hit .339 for Auburn with 13 home runs and 65 RBI. In 71 games, he scored 52 times and also hit 23 doubles and four triples. Patterson began his professional career on a tear as he hit .415 (17-41) over his first ten games of the season. The outfielder was as consistent as a player could be in 2005. With the bases empty he hit .313 with seven home runs, while with runners on base he hit .364 with six home runs. With runners in scoring position, Patterson hit .375 with three home runs and fifty-one RBI.

When Patterson was drafted the biggest question was how much power he would have with the wooden bats, and even Ryan himself was unsure of how his power will translate into the professional level.

"I hit for average, and had power with an aluminum bat, but wasn't sure how much that power would translate with the wooden bat" Patterson told InsideTheDome.

Patterson is currently one of seven outfielders in the Blue Jays Florida Instructional League camp. The outfielder will be working on his approach at the plate on counts that the pitcher has the advantage as well as his defense in the outfield.

"One thing I want to get better at is my approach at the plate with two strikes, and I always want to get better defensively" said Patterson.

Patterson played in center for most of the season for Auburn, but on occasion was moved to a corner outfield position late in the games.

"I can play anywhere in the outfield, but I think left field is where the Jays will put me in the future."
