Homer in 14th Inning Defeats Syracuse

John Castellano’s homer in the fourteenth inning of Sunday’s game propelled Scranton/W-B to a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse SkyChiefs. Scranton took the lead in the top of the second on a leadoff homer by Ryan Howard and the SkyChiefs tied it up in the fourth inning on Jason Alfaro single to drive in Gabe Gross.

Michael Nannini picked up the loss as he allowed the homer in his third inning of work. Scott Downs pitched a tremendous ball game allowing just two hits and one run in seven innings of work while striking out nine batters. Jason Arnold and Spike Lundberg each pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

Syracuse had their share of hits and walks, however, could not get the clutch hit as they stranded fourteen runners on base. Aaron Hill led the SkyChiefs with three hits, however, Anton French and Eric Crozier also reached base three times as they walked twice. Bryant Nelson had a game to forget as he went 0-7 with four strikeouts.
