Halladay Dominant as Jays beat Rangers

Throws Complete Game 5-Hitter

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Toronto Blue Jays haven't been scoring many runs lately, but with staff ace Roy Halladay on the mound, he didn't need much support.

Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay arrived in Arlington one day before his scheduled start versus the Texas Rangers, while his teammates were still battling it out in Oakland. Halladay arrived early to avoid his team's 6am arrival into the heart of Texas. It looked like the extra rest and preparation paid off, as the former Cy Young winner threw a complete game, five-hitter, striking out nine while allowing only one earned run.

Toronto jumped on the board early off of Texas starter Pedro Astacio, when Frank Catalanotto doubled to leadoff the game and scored two batters later on Vernon Wells' sacrifice-fly to right field. The score remained the same until the Rangers tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Richard Hidalgo reached on an infield single, and Adrian Gonzalez rattled one off the right field wall for a double, before Gary Matthews Jr. scored Hidalgo with the second infield single of the inning.

Pedro Astacio pitched well for the Rangers, keeping the Toronto hitters off-balance for most of the night, but not before the Blue Jays scored its second run off him in the 7th inning. Alex Rios reached on his own infield single, followed by a double down the right field line, alluding Hidalgo, setting up pinch-hitter Russ Adams' RBI groundout to take a 2-1 lead that would eventually hold up.

The night came to completion after the Rangers had men on 1st and 2nd before Gonzalez grounded out to first base ending their night, and giving Halladay his 16th career complete game. The Jays will try to make it two in a row on Friday as Ted Lilly gets his second start of the season after giving a strong outing against the Boston Red Sox after missing much of Spring Training. Ryan Drese takes the ball for Texas.

Friday's can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet starting at 8pm EST and on The Fan 590AM.
