Nine notable prep players from the area last year turned pro: Texas prep 1st rounders RHP Kohl Stewart/Twins and CF Billy McKinney/A's, 3rd round overslot bonus guys from Oklahoma C Jon Denney/Red Sox and 3B Drew Ward/Nationals along with 3rd round slot signs Texas RHPs Casey Meisner/Mets and Carter Hope/Royals and 5th-7th round guys signing for top 3-4 round money Texas RHP Thaddius Lowry/White Sox, Texas RF Corey Simpson/Mariners and Oklahoma 3B Trey Michalczewski/White Sox. The only top few round prep prospect to make it to campus was son of Hall of Famer Craig, Texas prep 2B Cavan Biggio/Notre Dame, who has first round potential with a strong college career. This year's class has more players that are candidates for the top 50 picks along with a power arm that could go in the top 5 (Kolek) to match Stewart from 2013, so I'll take the 2014 crop.
Texas/Oklahoma is a definite hot bed and there's tons of high-level Division 1 programs in the two states that are drawing from the fertile area. For this class, Texas A&M has the strongest class, with a first round type, a couple 3rd-4th round types and a couple 5th round types, giving them a good chance to get multiple contributors from this class. The Aggies are tending up a bit in both baseball and football at the moment just as the Longhorns are trending down in both sports, though Texas still has such name recognition, facilities and tradition that they will always grab a couple of the top players in the state. Oklahoma just added a new coaching staff that's a little late to make a dent in 2014 but already has two commits in a crazy loaded 2015 Texas class that's better than nearly every other state's 2014 class.
