Intro & Disclaimer

Now that the summer is over and school is starting, the first phase of the off-season for the 2014 MLB Draft is complete. College summer leagues and the high school summer showcase season are over and, after seeing most of the top events/leagues and talking to scouts to fill in some holes, I've got a solid idea of where the draft class stands right now. Over the next few weeks, I'll walk through the whole draft class, breaking it up by state/region and high school/college, with today's second installment being the prep class of Georgia.

It's important to note that while this list suggests there are 8 Georgia prep prospects will go in the top 3 rounds (106 picks in the 2013 draft), that isn't what I'm suggesting will actually happen for a few reasons. Once you get out of the top 5 players in this list, or the top two rounds, things get much harder to peg, even if this list was made the day of the draft. Between now and then, players get hurt, regress, their price tags don't match their talent and prospects get squeezed by the more limiting draft budgets ushered in by the new CBA. In addition, when you include late-round/over-slot bonuses, more than just the players picked in the top 106 picks get bonuses equivalent to talent level. All 8 Georgia prep prospects won't make my overall draft top 100 rankings (which will come out after this series is completed), but there will likely be at least 5.

Class Overview

Last year, the Georgia prep class was top-heavy with four first round picks: #5 overall CF Clint Frazier/Indians, #9 overall CF Austin Meadows/Pirates, #30 overall 2B Travis Demeritte/Rangers and #37 overall CF Josh Hart/Orioles. The next best prospects received 5th-6th round money, with three solid prospects going to school and all of them to play for Georgia: CF Stephen Wrenn, RHP Robert Tyler and IF Wesley Jones. This year there's only one top 10 overall pick quality player in Michael Gettys, but plenty of depth in the top few rounds, with as many as 5 with a chance to go in the first round, including Parkview HS lefty Mac Marshall having a chance to be the third first round pick from his school in as many years (2013 Josh Hart/Orioles & 2012 Matt Olson/A's).

Recruiting Overview

The talent is spread evenly in this year's class, with almost all of the players listed in the Atlanta area, considered one of the best metro areas for talent every year. It's a bit of a transition year as Georgia had a coaching change and after getting three solid players on campus from last year's recruiting class, they have two elite commits for this year's class with some other prospects still on the board. It will be interesting to see how the new staff acquits itself on the recruiting trail as their backyard is the main source of talent for most of their rivals.
