Welcome to our fifth and final weekly St. Louis Cardinals Arizona Fall Report, covering results from the November 11 through the end of the season.
The Team
Eight St. Louis Cardinals farmhands help comprise the Surprise Saguaros. Other organizations represented on the Surprise team are the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, and the Texas Rangers.
The Saguaros ended the season with a record of 17-14, which put them a game and a half behind the West Division champion Peoria. The Javelinas went on to defeat Salt River on Saturday for the Arizona Fall League title.
The Saguaros led the AFL with a 3.88 ERA while also allowing the fewest walks, 108. The team WHIP of 1.42 also ranked second as did the team strikeout total of 263.
With a .269 average, the team ranked fourth in the six-team league in average and second in on base percentage (.356). Surprise scored 166 runs, the third-best mark on the circuit while the team’s 19 home runs ranked fifth.
League Leaders
Mike O’Neill finished seventh in the league with a .368 average which was almost 80 points behind league leader Nate Roberts. O’Neill finished fourth in on base percentage and collected as many walks, 11, as strikeouts.
Kolten Wong missed the final week of the season with a leg injury. Wong finished third on the Saguaros in average and fourth in hits.
Colin Walsh ranked second on the team in RBI and fifth in slugging.
Seth Blair finished seventh in the AFL ERA race with a 2.25 mark while Kevin Siegrist finished ninth in the category.
Boone Whiting led the circuit in strikeouts with 33 in 25.1 innings, the fourth highest workload in the league.
