MLB Draft Scouting Report: Hudson Boyd
School: Bishop Verot H.S. (Fla.)
Events Scouted: Perfect Game National Showcase, Under Armour All-American
The word burly was invented for Hudson Boyd. He's built much like Yankees' righty, Joba Chamberlain. As just a teenager, that's a concern for some scouts. He's not soft by any means, but as as he is already, at nearly 235 pounds, staying on top of his physique will need to be a major priority. The upside to it is durability and physical maturity.
Clean, powerful, and consistent are all words for Boyd's delivery. He's mature not just in body but also in mechanics. He repeats exceptionally well, comes straight over the top and he uses his extra thick lower half and torso very well in his delivery. This is a prep pitcher who looks the same each time you see him.
Boyd's game is based around power pitching. He works at 91-94 mph, and has reached 95 mph on occasion. Considering how filled out he already he is, the velocity you see now is what you're getting for the long haul. He knows how to elevate his fastball and gets good riding life up in the zone. Boyd likes to attack early and often and has solid-average fastball command with potential to be plus.
The Florida native is very aggressive in pounding the zone with his fastball, but he's pretty advanced when it comes to mixing his breaking ball. He's the owner of an average 77-79 overhand curveball. As he gets more consistent this is a potential plus offering.
Mostly a two pitch guy right now, Boyd started mixing more changeups later last summer. He throws it at 81-83 mph but is lacking a distinct feel for it at this stage.
Boyd needs to be evaluated more like a collegiate pitcher. Projection is not something to really consider with him, but keeping his extra thick frame in check is. He has two quality offerings, and both could be plus pitches eventually. The upside is tremendous if he stays in shape and can get that changeup going. His combination of feel for pitching and above average stuff is highly impressive.
